The Martian – Andy Weir

If I were an astronaut, I would take this book to Mars, it will get you out of any kind of shit you come across.

On a serious note, I have never read a book so compelling as this. I started reading this two days ago and I finished it last night. Ok I have had the time to just read, but I just wanted to keep turning the page to find out what was going to happen next.

This story is about an unfortunate astronaut on 31 day planet fall mission to Mars with 5 other colleagues, on day six they have to abort to he mission due to a massive sand storm. Mark Whatney the botanist and engineer gets knocked unconscious and the crew believe he is dead, Lewis the commander makes the agonising decision to lift off from the planet without Whatney.  Whatney survives to storm and injuries and sets about making things good, with an upbeat attitude to survive this nightmare.

As the story moves on, everyone on earth and the crew believe he is dead, until someone sees something on satellite imagery to suggest that he is alive and well.

This starts and investigation in to how they can communicate with him, the main comms are down, so between NASA and Whatney they are both trying to find ways of contacting each other, one to let NASA know he is a live and NASA to let him know that they know.  Their mission continues and a rescue plan is drawn up.

I am not going to say any more than that, the book in briilant, written well to engage the reader and the humour used for Whatney’s character is brilliant. The writing draws you in to the characters feelings and his mission to survive the dust bowl of Mars.

I would encourage anyone to pick up this book, it’s easy reading and it will get you hooked within the first few pages.

Happy reading…
